3 Web Design Trends Worth Following

Posted October 18th 2012 Latest News - 0 Comments

If you pay any mind to current web design trends, fashions and tips, you’ll likely feel overwhelmed in a hurry. The nature of this business is its penchant for change, and the frequency with which it happens. How frequently should I change my design? How long can I get away with the design I have currently? And if I do make some changes, which ones should I make a priority? This week, we’ve got the top three web design trends worth following.

1. Size Matters. Because so many websites are now being designed for their inevitable use on mobile devices and smart phones, icons are getting bigger and bigger. Why? They’re easier to track down visually and, as a result, they help to improve the overall user experience. With roughly 50 percent of all web traffic coming from mobile devices, bumping up the size of your most important icons is one of the web design trends you should consider adopting for your own site. If not, you risk losing traffic to users who find your site difficult to navigate from mobile devices.

2. ‘Thinking Menus.’ In the ‘old days’ of web design, menus had to be clicked on in order to reveal a drop down menu for exploration. No more. One simple adjustment has been to create ‘responsive menus,’ which drop down for users to view simply by dragging a cursor over the menu. It’s a seamless adjustment that makes the overall viewing experience easier, improving overall navigational capability.

3. Pop-Ups. Huh? It’s true. In years past, pop-ups were viewed as a nuisance; always an advertisement or ‘spammy’ website that you had no interest in. Now, though, websites are using them effectively to improve the intrasite experience of its users. Some pop-ups provide immediate links to top news, email newsletter sign-ups, or social media login capabilities. In short, if the user will find it useful – truly useful – then these pop-ups can actually improve the user experience.
