3 Crucial Tips for Designing Mobile Friendly Websites

Depending on which statistics source you’re reading, the numbers may vary by a few percentage points, but the fact of the matter is that nearly half of all website traffic is derived from mobile devices – smart phones and tablets. And let’s face it – if your site isn’t optimized for this type of traffic, then you’re missing out on valuable traffic, valuable clicks, and possibly clients. Not to despair!   1. Design for small screens. When you’re designing a custom website, it’s now important to consider the types of displays on which your site will be showing. The iPhone 4, which remains the world’s most popular smart phone until the iPhone 5 fully penetrates the market, has a screen resolution of 640 x 960. Is your website scale-able to those dimensions? If it’s not, it ought to be.
  2. Service coverage. Let’s face it – cell phone network speeds are greatly improving, but they don’t come close to rivaling the speeds that can be achieved with ‘good old fashioned computers.’ That means clipped code, and a slim, trim overall back-end set-up. If it’s not necessary, get rid of it. Lighter is better.
  3.  Remember the fingers. Smart phones and tablets have touch screens, so keep that in mind when designing links and buttons. Smaller is better for the overall page design, but if you want someone to click on something, make sure it’s big enough for them to do so. If it’s important, it should be more prominent.
