What Does Your Web Design Say about Your Company

HomepageWhen it comes to online marketing, first impressions have a major impact on the success of your business. Things on the Internet move very quickly and it only takes a potential customers a few seconds to decide if they want to learn more about your company or move on to the next one. With just a simple click of the mouse, you can lose a sale to your competitor and your web design could be driving them away.

As the competition gets tougher, consumers expect more from businesses. If one company doesn’t provide the type of service they expect and demand, it’s easy to find another that will. For this reason, first impressions are very important. At first glance, you want your site to tell visitors that you have an organized, professional and friendly business but that’s not always the case. You may have excellent products and the best prices around but if your web design screams unprofessional, you’re going to lose business.

To help determine what your web design says about your company, you can do a little test. Imagine that you’re a customer visiting your site for the first time and evaluate it as if it were a competitor’s site. You can also ask friends or family to give you an honest opinion of how they would rate your site with these factors in mind.

The Overall Design

When you first enter the site, is the overall design pleasing and professional looking or is it a bit overwhelming. Clean, easy to read pages portray professionalism while cluttered pages with overwhelming colors and mismatched text can look childish and unprofessional. A poor design will give the impression you don’t care what your customers think, while a professional site tells visitors they come first and that you want them to have a great experience.

What Does Your Company Do?

When users visit your site, they should know immediately what your company does. If you sell fishing supplies, apparel or children’s toys, it should be obvious right from the start. If visitors have to search through your site to find out what products or services your company offers, you have a poor web design. You may have the products or information the user seeks but if it’s not made clear on your home page they will probably click out and go to the next site thinking yours showed up in the search by mistake.

Is It Easy to Use?

One of the main things users look for when visiting a website is ease of use. Each category should be clearly visible and easy to access. If visitors have to dig and search through the site to try to find the information they’re looking for, it causes frustration and they’ll associate your company with a bad experience.

An outdated website is just as bad as one that is difficult to use, so it’s important to stay updated with current technology. Just because you had a first-rate web design a couple years ago, doesn’t mean it still works today. A great web design that tells visitors you are organized, professional and friendly can open doors you never dreamed possible, while a poor or outdated one will have the opposite effect.
